Why 2025 Is the Year of the Canadian Road Trip

Canadians are falling back in love with their own backyard—and 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the great Canadian getaway. Two new surveys from Go RVing Canada—as featured in RV Pro and Auto123—reveal that Canadians are craving adventure close to home. And with RV travel gaining serious momentum, it looks like many will be hitting the road instead of the airport.

The Getaway Gap: We Want to Travel—But Haven’t Planned It Yet

There’s a clear disconnect between intention and action when it comes to domestic travel. Nearly 80% of Canadians say they want to explore more of Canada, but a surprising 43% have never travelled outside their home province. Even more telling, 64% haven't made any travel plans yet for 2025.

So what's holding us back? The biggest reason: inspiration paralysis. Many Canadians simply don’t know where to go. But once they do, the passion to stay local is strong—65% of those who are planning a vacation are choosing to travel within Canada.

Where Canadians Want to Go

The top destinations for 2025 travel within Canada reflect a strong sense of provincial pride—mixed with a bit of wanderlust:

  • Ontario leads the pack, with more than a third of Canadians planning to visit.

  • Quebec comes in second, drawing about 25% of interest.

  • British Columbia rounds out the top three.

Interestingly, the vast majority of Quebecers (78%) prefer to stay in their own province. Meanwhile, Ontario and BC residents are slightly more open to travelling within Canada, especially to each other’s provinces. Alberta stands out as the most adventurous group: only 55% are staying local, while the rest are heading west to BC or east to Ontario.

The Rise of the RV Traveler

One of the most exciting trends revealed by the surveys is the growing popularity of RV travel. About one in four Canadians has already taken an RV trip, and 44% say they’re interested in trying it. In fact, over one-third plan to travel by RV in the coming year.

This surge in RV interest is good news for the Canadian travel and tourism industry, especially as international travel still feels uncertain or expensive for many. With RVing, Canadians get the freedom to explore the country on their own terms—without the hassle of airports or hotel bookings.

Why Now?

Several key factors are driving this renewed focus on Canadian travel:

  • National pride: Much like the “shop local” movement, Canadians are embracing “travel local” to support homegrown businesses and communities.

  • Uncertainty abroad: Ongoing border concerns and higher travel costs are nudging people to stay closer to home.

  • A planning gap: While interest is high, most Canadians haven’t yet turned that curiosity into concrete plans. This presents a huge opportunity for travel businesses and destinations.

  • RV momentum: More Canadians are ready to try RV travel than ever before—opening the door for campgrounds, parks, and RV dealers to welcome a new wave of explorers.

Let the Journey Begin

Canada is calling—and in 2025, more Canadians than ever are answering that call with their own set of wheels and a map of homegrown destinations. Whether it’s a weekend in Banff, a coastal loop through the Maritimes, or a hidden lake in northern Ontario, the great Canadian road trip is back.

Haven’t started planning yet? You’re not alone—but now’s the perfect time to choose your route, pack your bags, and rediscover the beauty of this vast country we call home.
