PREPARING FOR THE HOLIDAYS IN YOUR RV
You’re going to want to make the most of the days leading up to the holidays, especially since you’ll be celebrating it in your RV, whether at an RV park or a campsite.
Celebrating the holidays on the road brings its own set of challenges that you’re not going to encounter celebrating at home. These challenges, however, are completely surmountable if you have a plan and stick to it.
Here are some helpful tips and hints on how to make the best use of your time this December to make sure that you’re prepared to celebrate the holidays, whether it's just you and the RV or a whole slew of people.
Decorate now, but make sure that you don’t overdo it.
You’ll want to get the decorating out of the way early since it's one of the things that can be done ahead of time. The thing is, though, that you’re in an RV, and that means that you might not stay put between putting those decorations up and the big day. That means you’ll want to avoid overdoing it. You don’t want to decorate so extensively that you’ll have to take down and put back up elaborate decorations every time you pull up roots and drive to your next stopping point. Stick to decorations that are easy to put up and take down and don’t interfere with the driving mechanics of your rig.
Shop now, but make sure that you can fit those gifts inside your RV comfortably.
You’ll also want to shop early. This is important because you need to not only get it done with like you would at home, but you need to take shopping opportunities when you can. You might be near a mall or big box store right now, but what happens later in the month when you’re out in the sticks? You’ll wish you’d already shopped. Just remember that you’ve got to stow those gifts somewhere, and space can be limited inside an RV. Keep it small or be prepared to scooch around that big present every morning to get to the coffee maker.
Know your menu and shop for the non-perishables early.
Take the next opportunity – maybe tonight when you stop – to sit down and write out your menu. Break down each item into ingredients and highlight anything and everything that’s non-perishable. Cross reference this against what your pantry currently has and take note of what you need. Next time you’re near a market, grab those items. Mark all items you need for your meal with a sticker or some identifying mark so you don’t accidentally use it. When the holidays are a few days out, acquire perishables. Prep everything the day before and simply reheat the day of. Your best bet? Keep the menu more subdued than at home since you have less storage and prep space to work with.
