You’ve been eyeing that motorhome in your driveway. Not too long ago you picked up that rig from your Alberta RV Dealer and have been thinking about a road trip ever since. With summer coming to a close, thoughts of doing a bit of salmon fishing come to mind. Why not find a campground that offers the best of both worlds?
Summer brings the sockeyes, pinks and Coho salmon to British Columbia’s Vancouver Island. The Chinook, also summer arrivals, are found in the Juan de Fuca Strait through the month of September. The fish are on their way to the waters of their birth to spawn. On the way they feed hungry bears, eagles and lucky humans who happen to catch one.
Victoria – South Vancouver Island
Victoria, British Columbia’s capital, offers camping and fishing opportunities at the Pedder Bay Resort & Marina. Arrive in August and take part in the resort’s “Bite Me Derby” which targets Chinook salmon. Bring your own boat to launch onsite or rent one. Private charters are offered. Fishing licenses and gear are available at Peddar Bay. The campground itself offers both pull-thru and back-in sites, some with ocean views and most surrounded by trees. Open March 1st through October 31st.
Sooke – South Vancouver Island
Sooke is an oceanside town roughly 30 kilometres west of downtown Victoria. Salmon fishing is a local passion. The Sunny Shores Resort & Marina offers campsites with full hook-ups, picnic tables, campfire rings, store, laundromat and washrooms. Choose from a tree lined campsite or one open to the sun. An onsite mini-golf course, which for some strange reason has 19 holes, offers ocean views while you play. Bring your own boat and launch at the onsite marina or sign on with a fishing charter heading to the Juan de Fuca Strait. Salmon runs last from the end of May through September. The campground is open year round and other types of fishing charters are offered. Fishing licenses, bait and tackle are available at the onsite store.
Stamp River Provincial Park – North Vancouver Island
August is also the best time to visit the Stamp River Provincial Park in Port Alberni. This is when the returning salmon gather in front of Stamp Falls before starting up the fish ladder. Fishing is allowed in designated areas on either side of the falls. The season runs from the 15th of June through the 15th of November. The fish, which are still running until the first part of December, attract bears and eagles, offering some memorable photo ops. The campground can handle RVs up to 32 feet long. Drinking water is available as is an onsite dump station. Campfire rings are available. This is wilderness camping, so be prepared for wildlife visitors, particularly at night.
